Cumberland Emergency Medical Services (CEMS) is the primary provider of emergency medical services for the Town of Cumberland, Rhode Island. Established as a municipal department, CEMS is dedicated to delivering exceptional prehospital care to both residents and visitors. Historically, emergency medical transportation in Cumberland began in 1958 with the Ashton Fire District's volunteer ambulance service. In 1979, the town assumed financial responsibility for a full-time ambulance service, leading to the formation of the Rescue Service Department in 1981. By December 28, 1982, the department advanced to providing prehospital advanced life support at the EMT-Cardiac level. In May 1985, it became the first EMS agency in Rhode Island to offer care at the nationally recognized Paramedic level. The department was renamed to Cumberland Emergency Medical Services in the fall of 2018 to better reflect its mission. The department maintains a fleet of advanced life support ambulances and response vehicles, including 2024 Ford F-450 4x4 units equipped with Frazer and Demers MXP170 modules, as well as Chevrolet Tahoe response vehicles. CEMS is licensed by the Rhode Island Department of Health as a Class A (Advanced Life Support) service. The department is committed to providing exceptional emergency medical services to the community.
